United States President, barrack Obama , yesterday assured Ghana of more support from his government to help the country combat common diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS.

“Ghana and the entire Africa have our support in the fight against preventable diseases,” president Obama said in a message delivered to President Mills here by John Carson, Under Secretary of State in charge of Africa affairs.

Mr. Carson, leader of the US delegation to the ongoing AU summit in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, told President Mills when he called on him to deliver the message, that President Obama considered the challenge of fighting diseases as a global one, which the U.S. was committed to helping to address.

He said President Obama was impressed about the determination of Ghana and other countries to eradicate preventable diseases to avoid compounding the poor living condition of people in Africa, adding that the US government was making the necessary commitments in support of various developing countries.

President Mills lauded the partnership between Ghana and the U.S, mentioning in particular US assistance in the health sector, which he described as timely as Africa continued to grapple with the problems of maternal and child health.

He said President Obama’s message to the AU summit delivered by the US attorney general, touched on all the critical problems facing Africa, and the assurance of the United States to overcome some of these challenges like conflicts, diseases and hunger, demonstrated America’s commitment to be a partner for the development of Africa.

Also on the sidelines of the AU Summit, President Mills interacted with the World Bank’s Vice President for Africa region, Ms. Oby Ezekwesili.
