The former head of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, Jeremy Ractliffe, has resigned from the charity's board after admitting he secretly kept diamonds received from the model Naomi Campbell.
Mr Ractliffe admitted he had the gems only when Ms Campbell mentioned him at the war crimes trial of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor two weeks ago.
Prosecutors say she received the diamonds from Mr Taylor in 1997.
Mr Ractliffe had apologised for his secrecy, the charity's board said.
The former chief executive handed the diamonds over to South African police after Campbell testified that she had given three stones to Ractliffe because she wanted them to go to charity.
Mr Ractliffe said he had kept the stones, which could link him to illegal "blood diamonds", because he wanted to protect the reputation of Mr Mandela and his charity.
Stepping down from his role as trustee, Mr Ractliffe apologised for causing "possible reputational risk" to the charity by not informing his colleagues of his receipt of the diamonds, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund said in a statement. 'Suggestion'
At the trial, Ms Campbell said she was given some "dirty-looking stones" after a 1997 charity dinner hosted by South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela where Mr Taylor was also a guest.

TODAY newspaper reports that a vehicle-stealing syndicate currently operating at the Castle, the seat of the Ghana government. The cars, this paper established, were impounded at the Tema Port by the Ghana section of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL). INTERPOL officials went on a virtual goose chase at the Castle recently when they embarked on a routine search for about six cars that INTERPOL officials say were in the possession of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia. The cars, believed to be stolen from overseas countries by some Ghanaians, were impounded by INTERPOL last year. Mr. Segbefia, the paper's finding established, could not tell the police officers exactly where the impounded cars had been sent to compelling the INTERPOL Ghana to give up the chase. When contacted on the subject, this is what Mr. Segbefia had to tell this paper in a text message response: "All impounded vehicles from the port are under the jurisdiction of national security. Please contact them for a response. Thank you Alex."

Ms. Gizelle Yadzi, a former Presidential Advisor to Ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor, who began haunting the latter over five years ago, appears unstoppable as she has now called on the government of Ghana, including Parliament, to reopen investigations into allegations of corruption she claims the ex-president committed while in office. In a come-back interview following reactions to her charges against Mr. Kufuor in an earlier interview on Wednesday, Ms. Yajzi last Friday prayed Government for an assurance of security for herself twin children she says she had with the ex-president, as a condition for her coming. She said she was prepared to foot the bills for her trip to Ghana as well as her boarding and lodging, while in the country, to lead evidence to expose corrupt activities of former president Kufuor. |
